We ended 2015 on a high with local community workers attending a sold out interactive and informative session – The Court Experience: Family Violence, Intervention Orders and Victim’s Compensation. Barwon Community Legal Service teamed up with Geelong Law Courts, Minerva Community Services, Bethany Community Support, Barwon Centre Against Sexual Assault, Deakin University, Victoria Police and Victoria Legal Aid to provide workers with a greater understanding of the Court process and how to support clients with family violence matters. As part of the event BCLS hosted the Western CLC November NoViolence plays to introduce the various types of family violence.
We know that 1 in 3 women experience violence and that family violence is the leading cause of injury and ill-health in women between the ages of 15 and 45. Each year, the Barwon region runs the Month of Action (MoA) to Stop Men’s Violence Against Women and to raise awareness of family violence across the community, with a focus on prevention and how best to respond to family violence. This Court experience event was part of the Barwon Month of Action.
